Abstract

Latour's is hailed as a foundational work of STS, particularly in the field of scientific anthropology. Existing research often focuses on teleologically exploring connections to other works or attempting fragmentary summaries of the influence of Latour's earlier experiences. This study, utilizing primary materials from the Beaune City Archives, reconstructs Latour's development of interest in science, his initial exposure to anthropological theories and methods, and his laboratory research at the Salk Institute from 1975 to 1977. The study finds that a series of serendipitous encounters and shifts led Latour to abandon his obsession with following and adopting American sociology of science, thereby establishing his unique laboratory anthropological methods.
