This paper explores how self-sustaining capabilities shape the digital transformation paths of manufacturing enterprises. Drawing on dynamic capabilities and resilience theory, it conceptualizes self-sustaining capabilities as the firm’s ability to continuously sense, adapt and regenerate resources under technological and market turbulence. The study proposes a framework linking learning, data-driven decision-making and ecosystem collaboration to alternative transformation paths, including incremental upgrading, modular platformization and end-to-end intelligent integration. By clarifying the microfoundations of self-sustaining capabilities, the paper provides theoretical insight into sustainable digital competitiveness and offers strategic implications for manufacturers seeking to avoid digital dependence and lock-in.
